Venetië
The Venetian Carnival
has been a famous event since the 17/18th Century. It was therefore
high time that I witnessed this unique event with my own eyes.
Those that expect the carnival to be an informal street party
will be disappointed. The "Carnevale" takes on a different
atmosphere, serene, formal, in a traditional spirit, acknowledging
its historic roots ... Most carnival goers dress in costumes dating
back to the the origins of the festival. Classical characters,
such as Pantalone, Arlecchino and Pedrolino originated in the
"Commedia dell’ Arte". This 18th Century folk-play
is the inspiration for many of the disguises and typical 'mascheres'
(masks) because social rank and standing disappear behind these
mystic facades, although .... most of the magnificently detailed
fantasy costumes and masks must have cost a small fortune. The
phrase "carne-vale" literally means "farewell to
flesh" and precedes the period of sobriety - the fast. In
Venice the festivities last over a week. Its current (global)
fame is really a recent revival of a festival that for many years
had fallen into obscurity. Through clever marketing it has become
a magnificent event that attracts both tourists and their Lires.These
impressions present an image of my lyrical memories.

Het Carnaval van Venetië
is al sinds de 17e - 18e eeuw een vermaarde attractie. Het leek
me dan ook de hoogste tijd om dit bijzondere spektakel met eigen(tijdse)
ogen te aanschouwen. Wie hier het losbandige Carnaval sfeertje
van zuidelijk Nederland verwacht komt bedrogen uit. Nee, het "Carnevale
di Venezia" heeft een heel ander gezicht: sereen, ingetogen
met een knipoog naar het verleden... Want veel feestgangers hullen
zich in kostuums die uit de pruikentijd stammen. Klassieke figuren
met welluidende namen als: "Pantalone, Arlecchino en Pedrolino"
zijn ontleend aan de "Commedia dell' Arte". Juist dit
18e eeuwse volkstoneel is een inspiratiebron van vele vermommingen
en typische mascheres (=maskers). Want achter deze mystieke
maskerfaçade vervallen rangen & standen. Hoewel...
voor de meest fantasievolle en gedetailleerde kostuums en dito
maskers zullen honderden guldens neergeteld moeten worden. Het
"carne-vale" betekent letterlijk "vaarwel vlees"
en gaat vooraf aan een periode van soberheid: de vastentijd. In
Venetië duurt dit feest ruim een week. De huidige (wereld)faam
is te danken aan een revival want het feest was in de vergetelheid
geraakt. Maar door een slimme PR-aanpak uitgegroeid tot een ware
happening waar heel wat toeristen op afkomen en de nodige Italiaanse
lires achterlaten.
Met deze impressies wil ik mijn herinneringen een "gezicht"
geven....
